Data Products | Custom Fields
Custom Fields let administrators extend the standard Data Product form with additional metadata fields specific to your organization — for example, a data domain classification, a business owner email, or an SLA commitment. Once created, a custom field appears automatically on every Data Product create and edit form, alongside the system fields.
Managing Custom Fields
- Navigate to the left main navigation menu, click Control Center > Settings.
- On the Settings page, select the ADOC Settings tab.
- Under the Data Products section, click Custom Fields.
The Custom Fields page lists all existing custom fields with the following columns:
Column | Description |
Field name | The stable identifier used in the API and storage. Every field name is automatically prefixed with cf__ by the system; this prefix cannot be changed. |
Label | The display name shown on the Data Product form. |
Description | The optional helper text configured for the field. |
Data Type | The field's data type (seeSupported Field Types below). |
Allowed Values | For Pick List and Multi-Select fields, the configured list of selectable values. |
Available for filter | Toggle indicating whether the field appears as a filter in the Data Products listing. |
Show in Marketplace | Toggle indicating whether the field and its value are visible on the published Data Product's Marketplace page. |
Use Search by field name to locate a specific field. Select the edit or delete icon on a row to modify or remove that field. Selecting a column header sorts the table by that column, in ascending or descending order.
Supported Field Types
Type | Input Rendered | Validation |
Text | Single-line text input | Alphanumeric |
Number | Numeric input | Numeric only; leading zeros stripped |
Date | Date picker | Valid date format enforced |
DateTime | Date and time picker | Valid date and time format enforced |
Text input | Email format enforced | |
Checkbox | Toggle | Stores true / false |
Pick List | Single-select dropdown | Values defined by admin |
Multi-Select | Multi-select dropdown | Values defined by admin |
Creating a Custom Field
- On the Custom Fields page, click Create Field. The Create Field dialog opens.
- Complete the following fields:
Field | Description |
Label (required) | The name displayed on the Data Product form. |
Field Name (required) | The identifier used in the API and storage. Must be unique and cannot contain spaces or unsupported special characters. ADOC automatically prepends cf__ to whatever you enter. Cannot be changed after creation. |
Description (optional) | Helper text shown on the form. |
Data Type (required) | Select one of the types listed above. Cannot be changed after creation. |
Allowed Values (required for Pick List and Multi-Select) | The list of selectable values. This field only appears when Data Type is set to Pick List or Multi-Select. |
Required | Toggle on to make the field mandatory before a Data Product can be saved. Defaults to off. |
Default Value (optional) | Pre-populates the field on new Data Products. |
Show in Marketplace | Toggle on to display the field and its value on the published Data Product's Marketplace page. |
Available for filter | Toggle on to expose the field as a filter in the Data Products listing. |
- Click Create.
The field is immediately available on all Data Product create and edit forms.
Editing a Custom Field
On the Custom Fields page, locate the field and select the edit icon. You can update the Label, Description, Required toggle, Default Value, Show in Marketplace, and Available for filter settings. Field Name and Data Type are locked and cannot be changed after creation.
Deleting a Custom Field
On the Custom Fields page, locate the field and select the delete icon.
Warning
Deleting a field removes it from all Data Product forms and clears its stored values from every existing Data Product. This action cannot be undone.
Where Custom Field Values Appear
- On the Data Product form: Custom fields appear below the system fields when creating or editing a Data Product.
- In the Manage Data Products listing: Each custom field appears as its own sortable column, showing that field's value for every Data Product (for example, True / False for a Checkbox field, or a date value for a Date field).
- On the Data Product detail page: Custom field values are shown on the Overview tab.
- In the Data Products listing filter toolbar: A field appears as a filter control only when Available for filter is enabled.
- In the Marketplace: A field's value is visible on a published Data Product's Marketplace page only when Show in Marketplace is enabled. Draft Data Products never expose custom field values in the Marketplace, regardless of this setting — values appear only once the Data Product is published.
How It Works
Required fields block saving a Data Product until a value is provided; optional fields can be left blank or cleared at any time.
Custom field values are stored with the Data Product record and returned in API responses alongside system fields. Submitting an unknown field name or a value of the wrong type through the API returns a validation error, and the Data Product is not created or updated.
Show in Marketplace and Available for filter are independent settings — a field can be visible to producers on the edit form while hidden from Marketplace consumers, or vice versa.
Notes and Limitations
- Field Name and Data Type are permanent once a field is created. Plan your field schema carefully before creating fields in a production tenant — there is no rename or type-change path.
- Deleting a field is irreversible and removes all stored values from existing Data Products.
- Custom fields are tenant-scoped. They apply to every Data Product in the tenant and cannot be restricted to a subset of products.
